What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implant surgery replaces damaged or diseased teeth with metal posts. These posts screw into the bone, providing an anchor for a crown or other prosthetic. Implants are usually a more aesthetically pleasing option for those who don’t want to wear bridges or other appliances.

What are the most common reasons people seek implants?

What’s involved in dental implant procedures?

  1. You lost a tooth and want to prevent further deterioration from taking place
  2. Dentures are no longer effective or sufficient for your lifestyle
  3. You have trouble chewing even soft foods
  4. An infection requires extraction that ruins your appearance
  5. Your tooth breaks or cracks from age, disease, or neglect
  6. Appliances no longer function properly or adequately
  7. You are tired of dealing with denture adhesive products
  8. You no longer feel secure when you smile.
The implant process could take between 3 to 9 months to accomplish. You’ll be evaluated to make sure your jawbone can support the implant, the tooth (teeth) in question may be extracted and you may need a bone graft to shore up the area. Once there is sufficient bone growth, the implant is installed under local, IV sedation or general anesthesia.

How much do dental implants cost in Townsville?

The nation’s Health Direct website posts this statement: “A dental implant is expensive — it can cost thousands of dollars.” Some dental practitioners are more explicit. A survey of professionals concludes that implant costs of between $5,000 and $6,500 can be expected. What are the benefits of dental implants?

Implant Benefit 1: Implants, usually made of titanium, look, function, and behave like natural teeth. One’s ability to chew hard foods is restored. Implants are biocompatible (non-toxic) and once successfully seated in the jaw, can last a lifetime with good hygiene practices, surpassing the average 10-year longevity of dental bridgework.

Implant Benefit 2: Implants prevent bone loss resulting from missing, decayed, or broken teeth. Bone loss can lead to serious health conditions, creating empty space within the jawbone that requires stimulation to maintain its integrity. If no implant is installed, up to 25% of bone volume could be lost.

Implant Benefit 3: Implants help adjacent teeth remain stable so the bite isn’t impaired could trigger TMJ, pain, infection, and/or headaches. When teeth shift due to a gap, gum issues can be exacerbated as food and bacteria become trapped. Additionally, missing teeth can make you look older than your years.

Dental Implants FAQs

What is the best age for an implant?
There is no best age for dental implants. Yes we try and avoid placing implants on people under the age of 25. This is the approximate age when your jaw stops growing.
Will I have a tooth during the implant process?
Until your implant is securely embedded in your jawbone, you won’t have a tooth because the area must heal sufficiently. Once your dentist approves your progress, you can be fitted for a crown. It’s possible to have a tooth before thi but we take a more conservative approach as this results in the highest success rate.
How long will it take for my implant area to heal?
This depends upon the number of implants, your general health, and the complexity of your procedure. The more steps involved with your treatment, the more heal time you need.
Could my body reject my implant?
It’s possible, say most dental experts, but not probable. In fact, 99% of all implant procedures are successful, thus chances you belong to the remaining 1% of potential rejection patients are negligible.
How long can implants last?
Considered a “long-term tooth replacement solution,” dental implants can last a lifetime. That stated, if you smoke, succumb to gum disease, experience bone erosion, or don’t keep up with dental hygiene, you could be one of the few whose implants don’t stand the test of time. It’s has been shown that dental implants do not have the same tolerance to the oral envionment as natural teeth. Very good oral hygiene is imporant in order to mantian the implant for life.
